Rock Physics Laboratory

We have an extensive array of equipment that includes the following laboratory instruments and workshop tools.
  • Sample preparation: coring, cutting, grinding of samples including drying under vacuum.
  • Petrophysical laboratory (density, porosity, liquid permeability).
  • Triaxial Cell for core sample ultrasonic measurement at confining and axial pressures up to 70 MPa, pore pressure of fluids up to 40 MPa. Temperature up to 85°C.
  • Unique Triaxial Cell for core sample measurements at seismic frequencies applying dynamic stress level less than 1.0E-7. Confining and axial pressures up to 70 MPa, pore pressure of fluids up to 40 MPa. Temperature up to 85°C.
  • True-Triaxial Cell for sample measurements at stress level up to 100 MPa (without pore pressure control)
  • Core flooding cell transparent for X-ray, for simultaneous measurement of ultrasonic P-wave velocity and distribution of fluids. Sample size 1.5-inch diameter. Pressure values up to 20 MPa, pore pressure up to 10 MPa.
  • Micro – core flooding cell for 3D X-Ray visualisation of the microstructure of rocks and fluid distributions inside the rocks at elevated pressures and temperatures. Sample size 5 mm diameter. Pressure values up to 30 MPa, pore pressure up to 20 MPa. Temperature up to 85°C.
  • Pressure cell for measurement of the fluid bulk modulus. Pressure up to 40 MPa, Temperature up to 80°C.
  • Pressure cell for powered compression and ultrasonic measurements
  • Odometric cell for powder compaction and simultaneous ultrasonic measurements
  • Odometric cell for artificial shale compaction, simulation permeability measurements and multicomponent velocity acquisition.
  • Simultaneous measurements of DC and AC electrical conductivity and hydraulic permeability of big cores. Core size up to 100 mm diameter. Pressure up to 2 MPa.
  • Various acquisition systems for signal registration.
  • Set of Isco-Teledyne syringe pump for fluid injection
  • Shimazu pump for liquid injection
  • Laser-Doppler Vibrometer (Interferometer) to perform accurate acoustic measurements of rocks properties at wide range from seismic to ultrasonics frequencies.
  • Pulsed Laser used as a “point” source of acoustic waves for rock physics experiments
  • Access to medical CT.Access to NGL facilities:
    – micro-CT (Xradia) resolution 0.8 micrometer ,
    – Nano-indenter
  • Workshop including Lathe, Milling and Drilling machines.
